Why 8×10 prints crop 3:2 camera photos

Almost all modern full-frame and crop-sensor digital cameras (Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm) capture images in a 3:2 aspect ratio.

However, popular traditional picture frames like 8×10 inches (and 16×20 inches) use a 4:5 aspect ratio. Because 4:5 is squarer than 3:2, printing a native photo onto an 8×10 frame requires slicing off nearly 17% of the image length.

The resolution you need depends directly on how close the viewer stands to the print:

  • 300 DPI (Arm's Length / 1–2 ft): Photo books, wedding albums, small framed desk prints.
  • 240 DPI (Normal Room / 2–3 ft): Medium framed wall art (12×18, 16×24 inches).

What is the minimum DPI needed for high-quality photo prints?

For professional gallery quality viewed up close, 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) is the gold standard. 240 DPI is considered excellent for photo lab prints and is virtually indistinguishable to the human eye. For large wall canvases viewed from 3+ feet away, 150 DPI is acceptable.

Why does my 3:2 camera photo get cropped when printing an 8x10?

Most DSLR and mirrorless cameras capture images at a 3:2 aspect ratio (1.5:1). An 8x10 inch frame has a 4:5 aspect ratio (1.25:1). Because the frame is squarer than the camera sensor, approximately 16.7% of the image length must be cropped off the top/bottom or sides.

How large can I print a 24-megapixel photo?

A standard 24-megapixel file (6000 × 4000 px) can print up to 20 × 13.3 inches at 300 DPI (Fine Art), 25 × 16.6 inches at 240 DPI (Lab Standard), and up to 40 × 26.6 inches at 150 DPI for wall posters.

What is the difference between DPI and PPI?

PPI (Pixels Per Inch) measures the digital resolution of an image file on screens and sensor pixels. DPI (Dots Per Inch) refers to the density of physical ink droplets placed on paper by a printing press or photo lab printer. In digital photography workflows, the terms are often used interchangeably.
