Wedding Photography Pricing Guide: Packages, Hourly Rates, and Overtime Fees
Table of Contents (5 sections)

Packages vs. Hourly Pricing for Weddings

Never charge weddings strictly by the hour.

Hourly billing penalizes you for working efficiently and encourages couples to micromanage your time: "Can you leave right after the cake cutting so we don't pay for another hour?"

Weddings are emotional, once-in-a-lifetime events. Couples are not buying 8 hours of camera operation—they are buying peace of mind that their memories will be captured flawlessly. Always package your wedding services.

The Three-Package Rule

Psychological research shows that when consumers are presented with three options, the majority gravitate toward the middle tier.

Use this to anchor your wedding collections:

Tier 1: The Essential Collection (Anchor Low)

  • 6 hours coverage (1 photographer).
  • 200 edited high-res photos via private online gallery.
  • Price: ₦350,000 / $800
  • Purpose: For budget-conscious couples with court weddings or short receptions.

Tier 2: The Signature Collection (The Real Target)

  • Up to 10 hours coverage (Lead photographer + 1 second shooter).
  • Pre-wedding engagement shoot included.
  • 450+ edited photos via private online gallery.
  • 1 Deluxe 12x12 flush-mount photobook.
  • Price: ₦750,000 / $1,700
  • Purpose: The most popular package with the highest margin.

Tier 3: The Heirloom / Luxury Collection (Anchor High)

  • Full-day unlimited coverage (Traditional + White wedding).
  • 2 Second shooters + 1 Drone pilot.
  • Pre-wedding session + 2 Parent albums + 1 Large acrylic canvas wall art.
  • Express 14-day turnaround.
  • Price: ₦1,800,000 / $3,800
  • Purpose: Makes Tier 2 look like an accessible bargain while capturing high-budget clients.

Pricing Second Shooters & Assistants

A common mistake is paying your second shooter out of your own profit margin.

Always build your second shooter's day rate into Tier 2 and Tier 3 packages plus a 30% coordination fee:

  • If a second shooter charges you ₦40,000 for the day, charge the client ₦60,000 within the package breakdown.
  • Ensure your contract states that the second shooter is shooting on behalf of your studio and cannot distribute images independently.

The Overtime Fee Clause

Receptions in Africa and worldwide rarely run on schedule. An event scheduled to end at 7:00 PM often extends until 10:30 PM.

Your contract must explicitly state:

"Coverage concludes at the contracted hour. Any additional time requested will be billed at ₦30,000 / $75 per hour, payable prior to the release of the final gallery."

When the clock strikes 7:00 PM, you can approach the couple or wedding planner calmly: "Hi! Our scheduled coverage ends now. Would you like us to stay another hour to capture the afterparty at the overtime rate?"
